Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the end of January increased in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been seized.
One account, which became a member recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a modest bet of $32.5K.

Market statistics shows that users estimated the likelihood of a political change at just 6.5% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.
But the market's assessment had climbed to 11% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the first hours of the next day, pointing to a sharp shift in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.
A small number of other individuals also profited significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Proposed legislation presented on Monday would prevent federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
