Users Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such treatments should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
